ZEITOUNA is a Mentorship Program for Displaced Syrian Children – a creative therapy and physical wellness program designed to inspire and heal the youngest victims of the Syrian humanitarian crisis: the children. WITH OVER 2.5 MILLION REFUGEES and 6 million internally displaced persons, Syria is now the largest humanitarian crisis of our lifetime. While the brutal living conditions of displacement severely affect all Syrians, the children are the ones to bear the highest trauma of war: lost homes, lost security, lost communities, lost educations. These factors threaten to culminate in lost futures of an entire generation.
ZEITOUNA, counters these traumatic factors by rebuilding bonds between mentor and child, rekindling inspiration and creativity, restoring confidence, and reclaiming the innocence of childhood. The program was born out of three simple concepts:
- EVERY child deserves to play.
- EVERY child deserves a mentor.
- EVERY child deserves to be inspired.
Starting SUMMER 2014 we (LILY- Love In the Language of Yarn)will partner the Karam Foundation, working specifically with the Zeitouna program for Syrian refugee children in the Salam School in Reyhanli, Turkey. This third Zeitouna mission will be lead by over 30 MENTORS traveling from around the world, including: Ireland, England, Brazil, and the United States and will serve over 800 at-risk Syrian children who have been denied access to school for over one year. At this time we are collecting supplies for the school (pens, pencils, crayons, note books, drawing paper, etc) and will send our first shipment off on 25th June.
We ask that when you are sending your parcels of knitting/crocheting you include a couple of pens etc. I realise that this may bump up the price of postage, therefore another option is to donate funds and we will buy supplies locally (here in Turkey) and post a photograph of items bought on our Facebook page.
