Help Us Keep The Syrian Children Warm.

The conflict in Syria is a children’s crisis and one of the biggest humanitarian emergencies in the world. More than 4 million children inside Syria and around the region are directly affected. They have lost their homes and friends, and many live in makeshift shelters. They have lost their schools. They have lost access to basic services, from water to health care. Many are traumatized by the violence they have witnessed.
More than 1 million Syrian children have now fled the violence in their homeland. Refugee children are staying in camps or with host communities in neighboring countries. Inside Syria, an estimated 2 million children have been forced to leave their homes and are now displaced. With winter approaching, we at 'LILY' are focusing on planning and preparation of winterisation aid. Refugees living in sub-standard shelters and at high altitudes are particularly vulnerable. Help us to keep these children warm, bring them a little comfort and show them we care.

Donate Socks Day

Syrian children who can not sleep in tents at night due to the cold weather can be seen with their thin clothes and no shoes or socks.
A Syrian child was seen trying to explain that he felt cold by pointing to his feet and head, he spoke in Arabic saying all he wanted was a knitted cap and a pair of socks.Wearing a slipper on one foot and an old shoe on the other, he looks forward to the day when he can have a cap and a pair of socks or shoes that are the same.

Help The Children Of Syria Keep Warm This Winter!

The escalating violence in Syria is having catastrophic consequences on the country's children and families. More than 4 million children are now affected by the brutal conflict, which is entering its third year. Within Syria, 3.1 million children are at risk and the situation within the country is rapidly deteriorating as the war crushes Syria's infrastructure. Power cuts and supply shortages are creating a critical situation for 600,000 people in Damascus and its outlying districts. The refugee camps in the countries bordering Syria are overflowing and there are now more than one million child refugees. For the children of Syria, what's at stake isn't politics; it's their future. When the fighting ends, will these children be healthy, educated and strong enough to rebuild their lives? You can help us to keep the children warm!
Please consider making a square or two today. Any spare wool you have can be knitted / crocheted / woven into eight inch squares and then we'll stitch them all together into a blanket. Our blankets are lovingly sewn together from squares made by adults and children from all walks of life and many different countries around the wold.

Send A Hug To Syria's Children

"Living God, our world is broken-hearted by the atrocity of chemical weapons being used in Syria, killing children, women, and men indiscriminately. And our hearts grieve no less for the many tens of thousands killed and millions displaced by the civil war there. We pray for peace, God of peace: not just the cessation of conflict, but a new day of reconciliation, civility, and collaboration for the common good ... in the Middle East, and around the world'' ( extract from a prayer for peace in Syria by )

As we join many people around the world in a day of praying for peace in Syria.
Send a hug to a Syrian child and help keep children warm during cold and wet Turkish winters,by knitting/crocheting/weaving 8 inch squares. We will then sew the squares together to make blankets for the Syrian refugee children. It will also let them know that they have not been forgotten - they are loved and cared for.

Every square is a hug from someone who cares!

Please consider making a square or two today. Any spare wool you have can be knitted / crocheted / woven into eight inch squares and then we'll stitch them all together into a blanket. Our blankets are lovingly sewn together from squares made by adults and children from all walks of life and many different countries around the wold.

Knit/Crochet A Square Today For Syria's Children!

The number of registered child refugees fleeing Syria's violence has topped the 1 million mark in another grim milestone of the deepening conflict. Roughly half of all the nearly 2 million registered refugees from Syria are children, and some 740,000 of those are under the age of 11, according to the U.N. refugee and children's agencies.

This one millionth child refugee is not just another number, this is a real child ripped from home, maybe even from a family, facing horrors we can only begin to comprehend. Even after they have crossed a border to safety, they are traumatized, depressed and in need of a reason for hope. Please help LILY to send a little comfort to each Syrian child.

A hand made blanket is more than a means of warmth to a child who has nothing. It sends love, and helps provide a sense of security and comfort to a Syrian refugee child who has been made homeless by war and sends a message of concern and hope. The thought that someone cares, and that this beautiful, handmade blanket was created especially for them.

Please consider making a square or two today. Any spare wool you have can be knitted / crocheted / woven into eight inch squares and then we'll stitch them all together into a blanket. Our blankets are lovingly sewn together from squares made by adults and children from all walks of life and many different countries around the wold.

Knit / Crochet Blanket Squares For Syria's Children

After more than two years of conflict, the situation in Syria remains dire. Families have been torn apart, communities ruined and schools and hospitals destroyed. More than three million people have now fled the war in Syria and are living as refuges throughout the region with anywhere between 5,000 and 10,000 refugees leaving the country on a daily basis - on average around 100,000 people leaving Syria every month, around 50 percent of these refugees are children. That's the official refugee population.
So, when you look at that totality in Syria you've got basically around a third of the population that is on the move or living away from their usual place of residence. Which is just a phenomenal state of affairs.

When Syrian children and families finally arrive at a safe place, they are traumatised, scared, and vulnerable. Some children are unable to talk - they are just so profoundly traumatised by what they've seen, this could involve seeing a loved one killed in front of them, they may have been living under the sustained shelling for a good deal of time or seen their house destroyed.

'LILY' is doing all it can to bring a little comfort and warmth to help these Syrian children but we need your help!
Please consider making a square or two with your odds and ends of left over yarn. Any spare yarn  you have can be knitted or crocheted into eight inch squares and then we'll stitch them all together into a blanket. No waste! also a great stash buster and a child with nothing gets a warm and colourful, cover for their bed!

Knitting Instructions
FOR ONE 8"/20 cm SQUARE, you will need:
Yarn from a 100 gram (3.5 oz) ball of yarn or scraps of yarn
worsted weight , double knit or 8 ply
Size 4 mm needles  6 (USA)
A yarn sewing needle.
Cast on 32 - 40 stitches ( depending on tension, try to make your stitches neither too loose nor too tight to help ensure uniform squares)
 Row 1: knit
Row 2: knit. These two rows form the 'garter' stitch knitting pattern for your square but you use any stitch you prefer, be as creative as you like. Continue knitting  until you have knitted a square
To ensure you square is 8"/20 cm either use a tape measure .

 Cast off
Use your yarn sewing needle to sew in all the yarn ends using a darning method

VERY IMPORTANT
Leave a half meter length of your yarn attached to your work after you have cast off. This will be used to join the squares together.
but if you're changing colors work in your other tails.  DO NOT TIE AND CUT IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE KNOT, THAT IS GUARANTEED TO COME UNDONE.  Knot if you want, but leave a tail and work in your ends.

Please Help Us Reach Our Goal!

We have been asked if we can provide 2,000 blankets for the children in a Syrian refugee camp near Adana, Turkey. We hope to be able to send the blankets by the end of September when the weather will start to become a lot cooler especially at night when you are living in a tent. So far we only have 110 blankets towards our target.

PLEASE HELP US REACH OUR GOAL!

If everyone reading this could knit or crochet just 3 squares we would reach our goal easily.

Every Tuesday  a dedicated team of 'LILY' supporters get together to sew the squares into blankets, while others take squares home to sew.  These blankets  provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to the Syrian refugee children who have been made
homeless by war and will send a message of concern and hope. Your participation is important in sending this message of hope, the thought that someone cares, that this beautiful, handmade blanket was created especially for them. It doesn't really matter what it looks like: even the most basic knitted blanket patterns will yield perfect results – a smile.

I realise the cost of sending items by post especially to Turkey can be costly which is why we are asking for just 3 squares ( of course we'll also accept more). If you could knit or crochet just 3 squares they would fit easily into an envelope and postage shouldn't be too great! (mark the package 'Knitting For Charity - No Commercial Value').
It really will make a difference to a child's life!

We work with reputable, experienced relief agencies to securely transport and distribute our hand-knit and crocheted blankets.

Make A Difference To A Syrian Child's Life!

The exodus of Syrian refugees accelerated dramatically in recent months, there are more than 1.6 million Syrians hosted in foreign countries. More than half of registered refugees are children and three quarters of registered refugees are living with local host families and communities in both urban and rural areas. If current trends persist, it can be expected that over 3 million Syrians would have left their country by the end of 2013. By the end of the year it is estimated that half of the population of Syria will be in need of aid. This includes an anticipated 3.45 million Syrian refugees and 6.8 million Syrians inside the country, many of whom will be displaced from their homes.
Help us to bring a little comfort to these Syrian children, something as simple as knitting or crocheting a square or two ( or three four or even more) can really make a difference. These squares are sewn together to make blankets for these children. These blankets  provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to the Syrian refugee children who have been made
homeless by war and will send a message of concern and hope.
