Help 'LILY' Provide A Little Comfort For Syrian Children

At the beginning of this year, it was estimated that the number of Syrian refugees would hit one million by the middle of 2013. That grim threshold was reached last month, which turned out to be the two-year-old conflict's deadliest month. And, today just six weeks later, there are 1.3 million Syrian refugees. In late March, Antonio Guterres, the UN's High Commissioner for Refugees, told a Congressional hearing that there might be as many as four million Syrian refugees by the end of 2013. Also in March, the UN estimated that there were 3.6 million internally displaced persons in Syria; the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is likely to revise that number upwards perhaps as high as 4.5 million, in the coming weeks. Even though Turkey is currently in the process of building six new refugee camps, on top of the 17 that already exist Turkey's camps can't expand fast enough for all the new Syrian Refugees and, along the Turkish-Syrian border, there are an estimated 100,000 people living between the front lines of the conflict and Turkish border.

Can you help us provide a little comfort for the children in these camps?

Any spare wool you have can be knitted, crocheted or woven into eight inch squares and then we'll stitch them all together into a blanket. No waste and a child with nothing gets a warm and colourful, cover for their bed!
I realise the cost of sending items by post especially to Turkey can be costly which is why we are asking for just 3 squares ( of course we'll also accept more). If you could knit or crochet just 3 squares they would fit easily into an envelope and postage shouldn't be too great!

It really will make a difference to a child's life!

We work with reputable, experienced relief agencies to securely transport and distribute our hand-knit and crocheted blankets.

Blankets for 2 New Syrian Refugee Camps In Turkey.

Syrian refugee camp in Turkey (Reuters)

Turkey is building two camps along its far southeastern border with Syria to house a growing number of refugees from Syrian minority groups, mainly Assyrian Christians as well as ethnic Kurds. More 250,000 Syrians fleeing civil war in their homeland have registered in Turkey, most of whom stay in 17 camps along the 900-km (560-mile) border, although the total number of refugees is closer to 400,000. The two tented camps, to be completed in less than a month, are being built in Midyat, a town in southeastern Mardin province some 50 km from the Syrian border. One camp with a capacity of 2,500 people will house mainly Assyrian Christians as well as refugees from other Christian denominations. The other camp will have a capacity of 3,000 and would house any Syrian Kurds fleeing the violence. We have been asked if we could help out with supplying blankets.

Can you help us? with just three 8inch squares. Any spare wool you have can be knitted, crocheted or woven into eight inch squares and then we'll stitch them all together into a blanket. No waste and a child with nothing gets a warm and colourful, cover for their bed!

Knit For Syria's Children.

Families seeking refuge inside Syria have had to endure two winters that saw snow fall across much
of the country, with temperatures as low as -8°C. Families fled, often without enough time to gather winter clothing for children. This winter, rationing of the power supply severely limited electric heating. Shortages of fuel pushed the price of kerosene up by as much as 500%, making it impossible for the poorest families to heat their shelters; in one area, 80% of households could not afford heating. This makes warm shelters and blankets all the more important, but in 2012 only 30% of those who needed blankets received them.

It really will make a difference to a child's life!

We work with reputable, experienced relief agencies to securely transport and distribute our hand-knit and crocheted blankets.

Just 3 Little Squares!

Syria has suffered its deadliest month so far in the two-year conflict, with more than 6,000 people killed in March, a third of them civilians. Almost 300 children died, taking the number of children killed in the conflict to around 4,390.As Syria's civil war continues unabated, thousands of children have fled across the border, terrified and desperate for safe refuge from the spiraling violence. Humanitarian needs are at critical levels inside Syria, with more than 4 million people in urgent need of relief. We at 'Lily' Love In the Language of Yarn are trying to reach these children and bring them a little comfort and wramth.

You can help us with just three 8inch squares. Any spare wool you have can be knitted, crocheted or woven into eight inch squares and then we'll stitch them all together into a blanket. No waste and a child with nothing gets a warm and colourful, cover for their bed!

Your lovingly made square will send a message of concern and hope to these refugees. Your participation is important.!
I realise the cost of sending items by post especially to Turkey can be costly which is why we launched this 3 square appeal. PLEASE spare a thought for the Children of the Syrian refugees and if you could knit or chrochet just 3 squares they would fit easily into an envelope and postage shouldn't be too great, or if you prefer to donate a small amount (3tl which is equivelent to 1pound sterling or 1.70 us dollar) then we'll buy the yarn and knit 3 squares for you.

It really will make a difference to a child's life!

Syrian Children Need Blankets

Two years after the start of the conflict the arrival of the millionth refugee across the Syrian border is a stark illustration of a crisis that is bringing fear, pain and suffering on a massive scale. Within Syria itself violence is intensifying and more than 4 million people, at least half of whom are children, are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. What was once a trickle has grown steadily until now more than 7,000 refugees cross Syria's borders each night. Travelling under cover of darkness, the refugee children and their families arrive at their destination frightened and exhausted, frequently with little more than the clothes on their backs. Many of the children have experienced tragic loss and witnessed horrific violence. Many are suffering with coughs, pneumonia and respiratory infections. Small children tell stories of how they hid in basements then found their homes destroyed and had to flee to the border on foot at night with the sound gunfire.
We at LILY are currently trying to provide the children with a little comfort by giving each child their very own blanket made especially for them.
Our blankets are lovingly made by adults and children from all walks of life and many different countries around the wold. They provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to Syrian refugee children who have been made homeless by war and will send a message of concern and hope. Your participation is important in sending this message of hope, the thought that someone cares, that this beautiful, handmade blanket was created especially for them. It doesn't really matter what it looks like: even the most basic knitted blanket patterns will yield perfect results – a smile.
Please consider making a square or two, any spare wool you have can be knitted into eight inch squares and then we'll stitch them all together into a blanket.

It really will make a difference to a child's life!

We work with reputable, experienced relief agencies to securely transport and distribute our hand-knit and crocheted blankets.

All children deserve to feel warmth and comfort!

As this crisis approaches its third year, the initial trickle has grown steadily until now more than 7,000 refugees cross Syria's borders each night. The scale of the crisis facing Syria's children requires a massive response from international humanitarian organisations.
Help 'Lily' Love In the Language of Yarn Knit Squares to make blankets for these Syrian children. Often just having one thing that the children can claim as their own and keep with them on their (sometimes rather tumultuous) journey helps them a great deal.
It really will make a difference to a child's life!

'Thoughtful Thursday' 3 Squares for Syrian Children

 Photo: Hussein Malla

There is a total of 184,977 Syrian refugees are currently taking shelter in 14 refugee camps in Turkey. The refugee exodus from Syria has soared to 5,000 a day, Syria's neighbor Jordan said that in February alone it had taken in more than 50,000 new arrivals. The humanitarian crisis is worsening day by day, leaving agencies struggling to provide help that’s desperately needed. Even if there was an immediate halt to the violence today, there will still be massive humanitarian needs that will need to be addressed for months and years to come. There is no quick fix, but we can help in a small way by helping to bring a little warmth and comfort to the children in these camps, and show that there are people around the world that do care.

  How You Can Help:
Please consider making a square or three with your odds and ends. Any spare wool you have can be knitted or crocheted into eight inch squares and then we'll stitch them all together into a blanket. No waste and a child with nothing gets a warm and colourful, cover for their bed!

Knit To Help Syrian Children

With increased violence and no end in sight, up to 5,000 more arrive every day, 80% of whom are women and children.
Many newly-arriving Syrian refugees are entirely dependent on humanitarian aid, some coming with only the clothes on their backs. Thousands of children have already suffered through months of terrifying conflict and displacement, and are now at serious risk of succumbing to the cold.
The image (courtesy of facebook) shows a young boy, covered in a carpet, sleeping on the cold snow in an uncomfortable position.

Children are particularly vulnerable to disease associated with the cold, and are in urgent need of protection. cold temperatures combined with freezing rains and strong winds are posing huge challenges for refugees who are already living in extremely difficult conditions. Some families are staying in unfinished buildings or abandoned schools, where classrooms have been converted into one-room shelters now housing entire families, and some are now living in former barns – sheep sheds and chicken coops – in their desperate bid to find protection from the elements.

We at LILY- Love In the Language of Yarn are working hard to provide blankets and warm hats, socks, gloves etc., for the children, especially the youngest, who are most at risk of succumbing to the cold – but there isn’t enough!
                                      We need your help!

Please consider making a square or two with your odds and ends. Any spare wool you have can be knitted into eight inch squares and then we'll stitch them all together into a blanket. It is a lot of fun and immensely satisfying knitting or crocheting squares to make blankets. It's a good way to use up scraps of wool and different effects can be achieved with colours and by using different stitches.

A handmade blanket will bring comfort and warmth to Syrian people especially children who continue to suffer. A lovingly made blanket will send a message of concern and hope to these refugees. Your participation is important.!

Help us make a difference today!

Let's try and send them a little comfort and the knowledge that someone is thinking of them.
