Help 'LILY' Provide A Little Comfort For Syrian Children

At the beginning of this year, it was estimated that the number of Syrian refugees would hit one million by the middle of 2013. That grim threshold was reached last month, which turned out to be the two-year-old conflict's deadliest month. And, today just six weeks later, there are 1.3 million Syrian refugees. In late March, Antonio Guterres, the UN's High Commissioner for Refugees, told a Congressional hearing that there might be as many as four million Syrian refugees by the end of 2013. Also in March, the UN estimated that there were 3.6 million internally displaced persons in Syria; the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is likely to revise that number upwards perhaps as high as 4.5 million, in the coming weeks. Even though Turkey is currently in the process of building six new refugee camps, on top of the 17 that already exist Turkey's camps can't expand fast enough for all the new Syrian Refugees and, along the Turkish-Syrian border, there are an estimated 100,000 people living between the front lines of the conflict and Turkish border.

Can you help us provide a little comfort for the children in these camps?

Any spare wool you have can be knitted, crocheted or woven into eight inch squares and then we'll stitch them all together into a blanket. No waste and a child with nothing gets a warm and colourful, cover for their bed!
I realise the cost of sending items by post especially to Turkey can be costly which is why we are asking for just 3 squares ( of course we'll also accept more). If you could knit or crochet just 3 squares they would fit easily into an envelope and postage shouldn't be too great!

It really will make a difference to a child's life!

We work with reputable, experienced relief agencies to securely transport and distribute our hand-knit and crocheted blankets.

Blankets for 2 New Syrian Refugee Camps In Turkey.

Syrian refugee camp in Turkey (Reuters)

Turkey is building two camps along its far southeastern border with Syria to house a growing number of refugees from Syrian minority groups, mainly Assyrian Christians as well as ethnic Kurds. More 250,000 Syrians fleeing civil war in their homeland have registered in Turkey, most of whom stay in 17 camps along the 900-km (560-mile) border, although the total number of refugees is closer to 400,000. The two tented camps, to be completed in less than a month, are being built in Midyat, a town in southeastern Mardin province some 50 km from the Syrian border. One camp with a capacity of 2,500 people will house mainly Assyrian Christians as well as refugees from other Christian denominations. The other camp will have a capacity of 3,000 and would house any Syrian Kurds fleeing the violence. We have been asked if we could help out with supplying blankets.

Can you help us? with just three 8inch squares. Any spare wool you have can be knitted, crocheted or woven into eight inch squares and then we'll stitch them all together into a blanket. No waste and a child with nothing gets a warm and colourful, cover for their bed!

Knit For Syria's Children.

Families seeking refuge inside Syria have had to endure two winters that saw snow fall across much
of the country, with temperatures as low as -8°C. Families fled, often without enough time to gather winter clothing for children. This winter, rationing of the power supply severely limited electric heating. Shortages of fuel pushed the price of kerosene up by as much as 500%, making it impossible for the poorest families to heat their shelters; in one area, 80% of households could not afford heating. This makes warm shelters and blankets all the more important, but in 2012 only 30% of those who needed blankets received them.

It really will make a difference to a child's life!

Just 3 Little Squares!

Syria has suffered its deadliest month so far in the two-year conflict, with more than 6,000 people killed in March, a third of them civilians. Almost 300 children died, taking the number of children killed in the conflict to around 4,390.As Syria's civil war continues unabated, thousands of children have fled across the border, terrified and desperate for safe refuge from the spiraling violence. Humanitarian needs are at critical levels inside Syria, with more than 4 million people in urgent need of relief. We at 'Lily' Love In the Language of Yarn are trying to reach these children and bring them a little comfort and wramth.

You can help us with just three 8inch squares. Any spare wool you have can be knitted, crocheted or woven into eight inch squares and then we'll stitch them all together into a blanket. No waste and a child with nothing gets a warm and colourful, cover for their bed!

Your lovingly made square will send a message of concern and hope to these refugees. Your participation is important.!
I realise the cost of sending items by post especially to Turkey can be costly which is why we launched this 3 square appeal. PLEASE spare a thought for the Children of the Syrian refugees and if you could knit or chrochet just 3 squares they would fit easily into an envelope and postage shouldn't be too great, or if you prefer to donate a small amount (3tl which is equivelent to 1pound sterling or 1.70 us dollar) then we'll buy the yarn and knit 3 squares for you.

It really will make a difference to a child's life!

We work with reputable, experienced relief agencies to securely transport and distribute our hand-knit and crocheted blankets.
